The Stuttgart Region is one of the most economically successful regions in Europe. At the same time, it is marked by numerous contradictions and conflicts: It is a prospering industrial and technological location, challenged by climate change, new forms of mobility and technological upheavals. It is embedded in a rich cultural landscape, but fragmented in terms of urban space. It is home to almost 2.8 million people, yet urban lifestyles are comparatively less common.
With new strategies for facing the challenges of growth, IBAIBA Internationale Bauausstellung 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart aims to shape the continuing development of the region to ensure that it remains prosperous and liveable in future. Its intention is to be an international showcase of architecture, engineering and building culture. With the IBA’27, the Stuttgart Region becomes a model for the transformation of industrially shaped polycentric metropolitan regions.
100 years after the European architectural avant-garde presented its then radical “housing programme for modern metropolitan man” in the Weißenhofsiedlung (Weissenhof Estate), the IBA’27 develops, curates and presents projects and buildings from the Stuttgart urban region that push the way into the future of architecture and urban development to the test. Four main themes form the framework of the concept: The building culture of a New Modern Age; integrated neighbourhoods; new technologies for the city region worth living in; and the search for a cross-border regional identity. IBA’27 projects are committed to a sustainable form of urban density and to overcoming the modernist segregation of functions. They are testing the transformation of the Stuttgart urban region into a post-fossil, integrated, fair and liveable metropolitan space.
IBA’27 is managed by the IBA 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart GmbHGmbH GmbH. The founding partners are the state capital Stuttgart, the Verband Region Stuttgart and Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH, the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects and the University of Stuttgart. An international board of trustees accompanies the IBA’27. Andreas Hofer is its director.
